Have you ever wondered how those who work within a corporate atmosphere view entrepreneurship?

I sat down with Kim Lariccia who is apart of the senior management team at Progressive Insurance. Kim has practical advice for both budding and seasoned entrepreneurs. This interview was centered on four areas of opportunities for most organizations. These four areas are: leadership, systems, money and business growth. Understanding these four components of an effective enterprise will catapult your business to the next level.

The first section dealt with was leadership. My question to Kim was, What are the components of a good leader? Her reply was, A leader has to be a dynamic thinker. A competent leader must be able to think on many plateaus; organizational, interpersonal and personal. At the organizational level a leader must think about the creation and articulation of the business vision, the culture of the enterprise and the return on human capital. The interpersonal plateau as Kim puts it is leadership is based on relationship. The people within your company must trust you, believe in you and in your vision. On a personal level, a leader must build mental and emotional fortitude. Mental fortitude is necessary, because as a leader you must think on many different levels. Emotionally fortitude is required, because ultimately you are responsible for the end result. Therefore your EQ (emotional quotient) must be high for you to have your vision completed through the efforts of your personnel.

The next subject Kim and I talked about was systems. A system is a specific way of doing some thing that brings about a desired result. Entrepreneurs must realize the importance of system development and maintenance if they desire to build an effective organization. Kim indicated that entrepreneurs should use the concept of benchmarking.

Finding the best practices of running a business within your specific industry and then mastering those systems is benchmarking. Do you know what your competitors are doing with their processes, policies and procedures? Kim gave a great suggestion for entrepreneurs. Carry an observation notebook. You will use this notebook to document the systems you observe within your industry and among your competition. Write down systems, practices, and processes, both good and bad and how they made you feel.

Every experience a customer has at your place of business will affect them on an emotional level. Does this sound familiar, When I walked into that store no asked me if I needed help. They acted as if they didnt want my business, so I am going to spend my money where I am appreciated. The customers experience is not logical, its emotional. As Kim said, A great customer experience is what drives success.

Then naturally, our conversation moved to the topic of money. My question to Kim, What should entrepreneurs focus on, cash-flow or profitability. Her reply, Cash-flow is the reality to stay in business, that is why you need solid backing from the start. Once your cash-flow is consistent, you can position your company to become profitable. Entrepreneurs must first get the resources they need so their companies can achieve a consistent cash-flow. A resource is not only currency. Its having a network of trustworthy colleagues that you can bounce ideas off of. Its also aligning yourself with employees that compliment you abilities. We ended this area with Kim saying, Dont panic about the money do your research This statement transition the interview to our last topic, business growth.

The question that was asked, How can an entrepreneur grow an organization? Kim indicated, It all starts with research, and this is the step most entrepreneurs try to skip. First, you learn about the opportunity. Is it good, bad or indifferent to you? If it is a good venture, then investigate to find out the type of infrastructure that is needed to capitalize on the opportunity. Finally, do your planning and your forecasting for your new business.

If possible after the research stage, Kim said, pilot your business. Some call this practice, test marketing. During this process you will find out if your research was accurate. This is also where you will tweak and fine-tune your systems. The piloting stage will give you a glimpse of the capital needed and returns that are possible without a huge upfront investment. Also, while you are piloting your business, make sure you document the best practices for your organization so your future employees can perform their jobs.

At the conclusion for the interview I asked Kim, What final advice do you have for entrepreneurs? Her response, Concern yourself with the what ifs. What if your company grows twice or four times as fast as you expected? What will you do? What if your business does not grow as fast as you have projected? What will you do? When entrepreneurs concern themselves with the what ifs, they will focus on the necessary up front preparation; research, planning and documentation. As a result, they will build and effective organization.

National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship Funds Programs in Miami Schools

This summer, 126 students from Miami Schools entered a six-week training session and contest to learn about entrepreneurship. Funded and run by the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, the six week summer session will teach the students how to create a business plan, how to secure start up funds and then how to pitch the idea to real business people. The twelve best plans will compete in the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship Macy’s 2006 Business Plan Competition. Only one winner will represent Florida in New York in October with a chance to win $10,000.

The Miami Schools system has some of the highest dropout rates in the state of Florida. One of the principal reasons for this may be that students a bored and do not see how their school work relates to the real world. The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship contest shows how owning a business relates to math and reading skills. This gives a meaning and a relevance to education. A study by the Harvard Graduate School of Education found that students exposed to entrepreneurship classes are more interested in education, are more likely to go to college and more likely to engage in independent reading than their peers.

New National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship Programs in the Miami Schools

The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship will, over the next two years, establish programs in 20 Miami Schools resulting in the program being accessible by nearly 3,400 middle and high school students. Some schools will offer more than just the summer contest but integrated into the curriculum. A Miami business lawyer and one of the judges who helped pick the finalists, stressed issues pertaining to the insurance and salary of the employees. This is the same issues that he would address with actual entrepreneurs. Several of the students from Miami Schools in the program have attempted to actually start a company. One of the biggest struggles I had in starting my business was actually coming up with the idea. I wanted something that was scalable as well as needed in our society. I combed through hundreds of ideas before settling on my current venture. Through this discovery period, I uncovered what I believe are the five most important concepts in determining what makes the perfect business idea.

So, what is a perfect idea? Each individual entrepreneur has their concept of the perfect business. While Google is a great business for the founders of that company it may not be a great business for others that are non-tech savvy or who do not want to run such a large organization.

Therefore, each perfect business is defined by the business owners. Keeping this in mind, lets start on my five concepts of finding the perfect business:

Number One – Understanding your customer: This might seem strange to start here as how do you know your customers before you have a business idea in place. The answer is simple your customers make the business, therefore without customers there is no business. If you have a business idea dont try to develop the idea around what YOU think potential customers will like or need, but find out what your customers actually desire. Too often business owners get an idea in their head and jump right in with both feet. However, they soon find out that their target market does not want what they are offering. Spending both time and money on a project just to see it languish is not the perfect business idea.

Moreover, lets say you dont already have an idea getting out and understand consumers (those who will eventually become your customers) may lead you to the perfect idea. Knowing what potential consumers need and building products to meets those needs will get customers beating a path to your door that is a perfect business idea.

Number Two Passion: Passion here does not mean being fanatical about your product or service. But, it does mean having some interest in what you do. More times than not, you will be spending 15 to 18 hours a day working on your business in the beginning usually for the first 12 to 18 months (more like 2 years in this economy). You have to constantly be thinking about ways to improve and grow your business as well as be out talking about it to everyone, everywhere. If you end up starting a venture that you dont have passion for, something that does not make you jump out of bed each morning, it will be very hard to put in the hours and energy to make it successful thus not a perfect business idea.

Number Three – Understand Your Competition: Every business has competition either direct or indirect. Think about movie theaters. They have direct competition from video rental stores or at home television. They also have indirect competition from any other activity that consumers spend their disposable income on like bowling, paint ball, golf, etc. Anything that people do in their spare time.

Further, some competitors are ruthless. Meaning that if you promote and offer a product that is similar to theirs but at a lower price, these competitors will just lower their price to match or beat you. If they are already established businesses they may be able to undercut your price enough to drive you out of business.

If you dont know your competition what they are willing to do to keep you out of their market you may be spending more of your time in a pricing war then growing your business not the perfect business idea.

Number Four – Cash Flow: Lots of entrepreneurs enter the business world with great ideas but very poor understanding of the capital it will take to get their venture off the ground. Most will prototype their product or service and understand what it takes to make the product or provide the service but they dont understand the capital it takes to manage the rest of the organization including marketing (very expensive but extremely necessary), employees (more than just salaries or wages), insurance or supplies and all the little miscellaneous expenses that add up very quickly like phone, internet, computer services, etc. Knowing your total cash flow will help ensure that all of your costs (variable and fixed) can be covered by the business the perfect business idea. I have seen way too many businesses with great products fail because they could not cover simple expenses like rent or utilities.

Number Five You: Know who you are. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Know that you are ready, willing and able to do what it takes to make your venture a success. I have worked with many business owners in the past that think all they have to do is hang out their shingle and they have it made. Thus, when it comes down to actually running the business day-to-day they are unwilling to invest the time, energy or money necessary for success. Thus, know how hard you are willing to work.

Moreover, know your personal financial situation and what you need the business to generate to cover your lifestyle. If you think your business will pay you a great salary from day one – it will not. And, if you need it to, it is not the perfect business idea for you. Take away outside distractions like your personal financial situation get those in order thus, when your business concept does materialize you will be able to solely focus on its conception and growth. In the end providing you the financial security you are seeking – it will be the perfect business idea.

Regardless of the level of your desire for your business a lifestyle mom and pop operation or a multi-national conglomerate if you develop a business idea with these five concepts in mind your idea will be the perfect business idea for you.

What are some business ideas for teenagers?
I am 14 going on 15 and I'm looking for ideas to start up my own business this summer.
I have no idea what to do so any ideas? I'm great with kids and I love them but the people here all have nannies so I don't know how that would work out since they are not in need of babysitters or anything of that sort.
Also, I am tech savvy but I don't know what I could do with that.
