Have you ever wondered how those who work within a corporate atmosphere view entrepreneurship?

I sat down with Kim Lariccia who is apart of the senior management team at Progressive Insurance. Kim has practical advice for both budding and seasoned entrepreneurs. This interview was centered on four areas of opportunities for most organizations. These four areas are: leadership, systems, money and business growth. Understanding these four components of an effective enterprise will catapult your business to the next level.

The first section dealt with was leadership. My question to Kim was, What are the components of a good leader? Her reply was, A leader has to be a dynamic thinker. A competent leader must be able to think on many plateaus; organizational, interpersonal and personal. At the organizational level a leader must think about the creation and articulation of the business vision, the culture of the enterprise and the return on human capital. The interpersonal plateau as Kim puts it is leadership is based on relationship. The people within your company must trust you, believe in you and in your vision. On a personal level, a leader must build mental and emotional fortitude. Mental fortitude is necessary, because as a leader you must think on many different levels. Emotionally fortitude is required, because ultimately you are responsible for the end result. Therefore your EQ (emotional quotient) must be high for you to have your vision completed through the efforts of your personnel.

The next subject Kim and I talked about was systems. A system is a specific way of doing some thing that brings about a desired result. Entrepreneurs must realize the importance of system development and maintenance if they desire to build an effective organization. Kim indicated that entrepreneurs should use the concept of benchmarking.

Finding the best practices of running a business within your specific industry and then mastering those systems is benchmarking. Do you know what your competitors are doing with their processes, policies and procedures? Kim gave a great suggestion for entrepreneurs. Carry an observation notebook. You will use this notebook to document the systems you observe within your industry and among your competition. Write down systems, practices, and processes, both good and bad and how they made you feel.

Every experience a customer has at your place of business will affect them on an emotional level. Does this sound familiar, When I walked into that store no asked me if I needed help. They acted as if they didnt want my business, so I am going to spend my money where I am appreciated. The customers experience is not logical, its emotional. As Kim said, A great customer experience is what drives success.

Then naturally, our conversation moved to the topic of money. My question to Kim, What should entrepreneurs focus on, cash-flow or profitability. Her reply, Cash-flow is the reality to stay in business, that is why you need solid backing from the start. Once your cash-flow is consistent, you can position your company to become profitable. Entrepreneurs must first get the resources they need so their companies can achieve a consistent cash-flow. A resource is not only currency. Its having a network of trustworthy colleagues that you can bounce ideas off of. Its also aligning yourself with employees that compliment you abilities. We ended this area with Kim saying, Dont panic about the money do your research This statement transition the interview to our last topic, business growth.

The question that was asked, How can an entrepreneur grow an organization? Kim indicated, It all starts with research, and this is the step most entrepreneurs try to skip. First, you learn about the opportunity. Is it good, bad or indifferent to you? If it is a good venture, then investigate to find out the type of infrastructure that is needed to capitalize on the opportunity. Finally, do your planning and your forecasting for your new business.

If possible after the research stage, Kim said, pilot your business. Some call this practice, test marketing. During this process you will find out if your research was accurate. This is also where you will tweak and fine-tune your systems. The piloting stage will give you a glimpse of the capital needed and returns that are possible without a huge upfront investment. Also, while you are piloting your business, make sure you document the best practices for your organization so your future employees can perform their jobs.

At the conclusion for the interview I asked Kim, What final advice do you have for entrepreneurs? Her response, Concern yourself with the what ifs. What if your company grows twice or four times as fast as you expected? What will you do? What if your business does not grow as fast as you have projected? What will you do? When entrepreneurs concern themselves with the what ifs, they will focus on the necessary up front preparation; research, planning and documentation. As a result, they will build and effective organization.

Thank you to Kim Lariccia for your time and needed wisdom. This information will help entrepreneurs on their journey to building an effective organization.

Tapas: uniquely Spanish dishes from the Spanish word tapar which means to cover in Spanish, thought to come about as a result of Innkeepers in bygone days, covering glasses of wine with small plates of cheese or sausage, to stop flies and mosquitoes flying in?

Others say that tapas began to be served at the entrance to Inns, to satisfy the hunger of travellers who would halt briefly on their journeys, but had no time to get down from their horses or carriages even for a bite to eat and a glass of wine: hence, a small snack (the tapar ,or cover) was passed to them on top of the wine for a quick bite and drink!

Whatever the reason for the tapar I promised myself that one day I would open a Restaurant (or two or three), specialising in this wonderful and uniquely Spanish way, of fun dining in sharing these wonderfully simply but incredibly tasty dishes, with family and friends.

Unlike a lot of British citizens, I did not discover Spain until later in life, when I was asked (some twenty years ago), to carry out some work for Shell Espaa as a Consultant in the Offshore Oil & Gas business.

At that time we were based in San Carlos de la Rapita, a beautiful area in the Ebro Delta, Catalunya, where absolutely no-one spoke any English (mainly Catalan) , but where I could get by learning the basics of Castilian Spanish (also useful everywhere else in Spain)!

My travels with Shell took me to the North of Spain (Santander, Gijon…) and to Madrid, where, after this short amount of experience in Spain, I realised what I might have been missing in life!

From that moment on, I immersed myself into the culture of the Spanish, the food, the fiestas, the excitement, the colour, the music, the dance, I embraced it all with a great deal of enthusiasm, and have done ever since.

As a keen amateur cook, I have always tried my hand at the local dishes wherever I had lived, but traditional Spanish dishes blew me away and I absolutely loved the idea of the Tapa, where small tasty dishes can be shared with family and friends; never feeling full always feeling as if you need another bite; such an incredible variety of seafood, meats, chorizos (spicy Spanish Sausage), shellfish, vegetables……..

Hence, many years later and with an apartment in my favourite City of Barcelona, having travelled throughout Spain and with a great deal more business experience; the first Tapas Tree business investments emerged at Clark Quay, Singapore, some four years ago.

Through personal contacts: identifying the correct site for our first restaurant, researching many restaurants overseas for the chefs who could cook my favourite dishes in their truly authentic fashion, designers who could help me simulate the Spanish feel in my restaurants, the selection of products from Spain, wines, etc…….

This gave birth to The Tapas Tree Group business franchise: now with three Singapore restaurants business investments of various size and location operating profitably and looking towards more Singapore franchise opportunities and franchise opportunities overseas; we are by far the most original in South East Asia, for our food, our ambience and our designs, from our hand-made mosaic tables, our eye for getting the Spanish look through the use of terracotta, wrought iron and red brick, to the personal photographs I have on display; not forgetting of course the images of one of Spains most prolific and in-demand Flamenco Dance Photographers, Ana Palma! Our Spanish customers call us, That little bit of Spain, in South East Asia, a title that I am immensely proud of!

Astreem Corporation is the franchise consultants for The Tapas Tree Group who are the franchise opportunities partner for businesses that are looking for franchise business opportunities in the Singapore bar and restaurant franchise market of interest. Astreem is constantly on the lookout for franchise opportunities for The Tapas Tree regionally and internationally.

Now, I am going to share you my 7 winning tips to work at home make money online at home & boost your sales today. Youll discover a lot of make money business opportunities online to make money online at home here. Those tips are already tested and proven that they work very well for my home based internet marketing business.

READ THIS: If you are truly serious about how to build highly home based internet marketing business and make money online at home. Youll discover that those tips will help you definitely increase your make money business opportunities online.

The Internet has now become an important medium for product and service advertisements. Almost every company that cant afford print, radio and TV advertisements have also ventured into placing ads on the Internet. It is a great alternative and the fastest growing for advertisements.

But with millions of websites out there being visited by millions of internet surfers/users, how can you make sure that your ads can be seen by your target internet users or customers and that your leads will be followed by these users? Youll discover 7 winning tips to ensure that your home based internet marketing business are grown and your ads are seen by targeted users. Also, your make money business opportunities online will be increased.

1. Place an ad or banner ads on the websites frequented by your target customers. Before doing this, you need to define who will be your target customers. Placing an ad on websites that they usually visit will increase the possibility that your ad will gain the attention and will be following by your target customers.

Also, consider the website’s search engine placement, traffic, external linking and the other ads placed on it. External linking will determine if there are other websites that link to this website. This will mean that people can get to the website where your ad is placed, even if they are browsing a different website. Check if many of your competitors have ads on this website.

2. Placing ads on some websites cost some money. However, there are also websites that can place a link to your website, products or services in exchange of having their link being displayed on your website. This is also true about the newsletters sent by website owners to its mailing list members regularly.

Additionally, having helpful links placed on your website and having websites link to your pages help in boosting search engine ranking. This is similar to making a statement that your website’s content is important that other websites have links to your web pages.

3. Pay-per-click (PPC) is also an extremely powerful in home based internet marketing business. You will only need to pay for the ad if the link is clicked. If you prefer this approach of advertisement, make sure that you are using services that set limits on daily expenses. There are also services that help you determine effective keywords and monitor the PPC results.

Personally, I strongly recommend you to keep your eyes on your PPC campaign carefully. You can make money online at home with those campaigns, whereas, you can lose your money as well. Also, I would recommend you to learn EXACTLY proven success steps for advertising your website, blog, products or services through PPC campaigns.

Learn more how to make money online at home and the success steps of how to build highly profitable PPC campaigns.

4. Choose your domain name wisely. It is still being debated if domain names matter when it comes to search engine placement. Whether it does or not, having product related domain names help consumers remember your domain, which they can go back to your website even without the links.

Truly, I would recommend you to have your domain name corresponding with your home based internet marketing business. There are several benefits for relevancy domain names. For example, it can be memorable and it will help you with the page ranking in search engines.

5. Make sure you have high quality & well written content on your websites. While keyword density is important in search engine placement, having useless information or annoying repetition of keywords will not increase your customer’s confidence in your website. It may even affect your websites traffic and can get your website removed from search engines. So make sure that keywords are used strategically.

Seriously, I dont recommend you to create a SPAM website for increasing the page ranking from search engines. Come one, people! This is a real home based internet marketing business on the internet. Think about long-term solution and be outstanding from your competitors. Youll make money online at home for a long time. Also, there are a lot of make money business opportunities online out there waiting for you to grab.

6. When thinking of keywords, think like your target customers. What do you think are they going to search so they can get to your site? Also, use specific keywords or key phrases. Submitting a single word or a very general phrase to a search engine will not get you to the top of the search results compared to submitting specific keywords that describe your product and services perfectly.

My highest recommendation is to do seriously the EFFECTIVE keyword research! There are a TON of niche keywords waiting for your usage. Discovering and expanding your keyword list effectively is the most critical path to your highly successful on the internet.

Visit at http://www.zKeywordTool.com to learn more about how to do effective keyword research and discover your own keyword research tool.

7. Track your ads. Monitoring is one of the critical factors for your success. Always check how much you have spent on placing links on frequently visited websites and on PPC campaign. There are services that allow you to monitor PPC transactions and how many of these end in sales. You always need to consider if the ads that you have placed on these websites are getting you to your target consumers and if these ads can lead to revenue.

Moreover, one final tip on marketing products and services, sell the benefits. It will help your marketing strategies a lot if you highlight the benefits of choosing your products and services instead of merely discussing the product specifications. Features or product specifications may not mean much to customers, unless they know what these stand for (how these specifications affect the quality of the product or service).

Remember, features TELL, benefits SELL! Which one do you want?

Many people say getting to the top of search engine results is difficult since millions of websites exist, which can be using the same keywords. While this is true, this doesn’t mean that your website has to stack under your competitors’ websites when presenting search engine results. Strategic advertising and linking, together with useful content, can also get you to the top of the search results.

Finally, the 3 critical keys for my winning tips are: Relevancy, Quality and Consistency. You have to do seriously keywords research in order to find highly relevancy keywords. Also, you have to provide high quality content on your website. At last, you have to do them consistency!

1.	Introduction

Agricultural development over years has been the result of continuous agri skill generation and its popularization. The earliest agriculture was animal domestication over thousands of years ahead, man domesticated wild fowl, dog, goat and smaller animals, whom he could overpower easily and subjugate to his sub-ordination. Agriculture thus since beginning has been the results of trails, experiments and experiences over years, learned first though behavioral changes, psychic reoccurrences, memories passed through parents to children and later on through doing and learning and now through sharing experiences and writing them or dotting them as an Entrepreneurship concern.

2.	Entrepreneurship concept

The Entrepreneurship adds economic profits and cost-benefit ratios to Agricultural Output. Entrepreneurship is dominated by four factors like:

a.	Social systemic changes

b.	Support system availability and use

c.	Resource base and its utilization

d.	Self confidence, exploration work capacity and intellectual potency.

An entrepreneur has to have a thinking of his own, a capacity building interest in acquiring needed technique. An explorative and analytic faculties to judge the way of procuring cheap raw material. He must be equipped with knowledge and mindset to use and benefit out of it.

3.	Farm Business

A potential entrepreneurship must strive from getting maximum output. Decades back agricultural development and industrial setups was a public sponsored and heavily subsidized but over time knowledge explosion in India Agriculture, have brought us on threshold of a system, where wide distances exist between industry and farm business. Where huge subsidies are benefiting Agro-Industrialists. The Farmers who use fertilizers or agro-chemical are crushed under economic pressures. The gaps between technology generated and technology use at farmers door is increasing day after day. The farm technology adoption rates are not more than 20-30% by any higher prospective. The use of information and communication technology (I&CT) for reducing the gaps and increasing productivity is the need of the hour (Wani, 2005). The modern technology and knowledge flow is fast expanding and bringing change. It demands more educated and trained farmers. Our education system has produced more literates but not educationally trained youth to earn their own bread. They after attaining graduation in agriculture and allied sectors, beg for job. The system has to be corrected to make these graduates as employers and not employees. I wrote a treatise as back as 1992, emphasizing a system. Germans are smart to have Farmers school, Farmer business training institutes, practical agri-farmers training centres and like, where way farmer or animal husbandry man is essentially a trained fellow. The banking system is so organized that they are on the door of convocation hall to sell their agri-business and agri-clinics to graduates, without any personal investments. Banks are so smart, that they have surveyed the villages who need vets or agri-graduates or have attained land and all facilitation, so that agricultural or veterinary or even other medico-biological graduates are used as bank investment. This is what is envisaged in India under agriclinic, Agribusiness venture. We have trainings not in the hands of banks but universities.

4. Success of Agribusiness:

A systematic liaison and support system between Govt. banking and University culture has made this otherwise an remunerative and lucerative programmes into a failure inspite of its personal monitoring of PMO. The success of Agri-business and Agri-clinics success rates are shown in table 1. The universities involve and their success stories are shown in table 2. Both these details are distressing inspite of huge moral, financial support from Govt. This is inspite of subsidiary support table 3.

Various ventures are listed in table 4 – 7. Agricultural professionals are getting converted into Agribusiness and agri-clinical experts. More than 14,000 applicants and 615 agriclinics came to existence in Indian 12 states. The agri clinic trained persons in J&K many number in hundreds. Among them 34 have registered agri clinics earning a handsome profit annually.

We visited Bandipora district and unregistered Agriclinics were earning a handsome salary, more than the Rahbar-e-zerat or Agriculture Asstt. A visit documentary is enclosed and shall be shown. It consisted of Agribusiness viz sale of pesticides, cattle feed, poultry feed and agri-extension services. At a small village in Papchan, one agri graduate Mr. Iqbal Shah earns Rs. 10,000/- per month by selling the services and input. At a distance of few kms. In same district one Mr. Khyatlani owns a big poultry farm and earns around Rs. 20,000/- per month. Both these entrepreneurs employ 2-3 persons at present. Similarly, the success shown by one Mr. Shah at Malangam in Agri products and pesticide sale and one Mr. Bhat in Dairy production and milk product sale earn a handsome income besides generating employment for poor.

5.	Farmer as Entrepreneur

Indian Farming and farmer has to change if proper WTO recommendation and GATT agreements are to be followed.

The present day poultry scenario has emerging high profile agri-business prospects in India.

The conversion of poultry farmers into poultry entrepreneurs shall make the present day 6% contribution of poultry products to 25% share of Global market from India and China. This when translated into action shall increase employment generation by manifolds. The introduction of rural based Vanraja, Gramapriya, Giriraja, Cari Gold and vast other locally grown varieties of poultry have adopted well to our agri-rural base. The market acceptability is higher than exotic poultry concerns. Research to farmers doors in generating free-rang-poultry is like BT cotton hybrid spreading through villages of India and assuring high returns and exports (wani, 2007).

6.	Poultry as Agri-business

Dr. Gordon Butland, president of Global poultry strategies presents Backyard poultry production as a tool of alleviating poverty and malnutrition. We have tried to distribute birds under free-rang system in all our KVKs our results were excellent and income generation was totally in favour of the Agri-business and agri-clinics as will be shown in case histories and success stories.

A grand show of using poultry, rabbit meat processing introduction at SKUAST-K have innovated white meat usage. Our own preparation could be seen in Figs 1-3.

This all will need the involvement of Agri-Veterinary and food processing technocrats to develop rural-based establishments so as to faster export and fast returns.

7.	Holistic Vision for Livestock Enterprise.

Improving income, employment and self-reliance are among educated graduates and un-employed youth especially women needs fostering community development, women empowerment, environmental protection. Rural-based backyard poultry subscribes to all these norms and could be a rich resource for developing agri-entrepreneurship. Govt. of India is liberally financing such agri-business ventures and a proposed infrastructure cost set-up can be seen in table 8. A vast and finance assured schemes are available for agri-graduates for establishing poultry ventures (table 9). An initial allocation of 107 crores for initiating nucleus breeding farms. Further more provision of hatcheries to provide chicks to more than 2 lac farmers and farm women will need many agri-business centres for providing basic germplasm, medicine and above all training.

Some of the success stories in animal husbandry section can be reproduced as follows:

a.	Backyard poultry and incubation

Though the Vanraja are the most suitable for back yard poultry, they do not have habit of broodiness. There is a problem among the farmer to get a broody hen in all season. KVK solve this problem of hatching by installing small unit of hatchery. Every month 15-20 farmers are benefited by purchasing chicks for backyard poultry. There 200 back yard poultry units of Vanraja. Each farmer is rearing 10 to 25 in the backyard. There is a good demand and response for the chicks and eggs of Vanraja. KVKs are now planning to expand this unit.

b.	Semi-stall-fed Goat Rearing

KVKs made an intervention to improve this enterprise by conducting short durational training programmes for rural youth. Similarly exposure visit were organized on goat feed, breed and health management. More emphasis was given on O)smanabadi goat and up-gradation in selected non-descript goat breed by osmanabadi pure buck and given the knowledge about semi stallfed goat rearing concept.

c.	Broiler Production

KVK has conducted many durational training programmes for 165 trainees. Due to training and demonstrations awareness was increased about contract farming in broiler production with private sector which provide chicks, feed and medicine and after 40 days purchases Rs. 3 to 3.50 per kg on live weight and FCR basis and changed their attitude. They acquired skills through learning by doing at KVK demonstration unit.

The technology has been adopted by 10 percent of youths now in the radius of 20 km there are 27 poultry units having capacity of 5000-10000 poultry birds on contract farming basis. These self employed rural youth earning Rs 10000-15000 per lot.

Recently a seminar-cum-farmers meet was arranged at SKUAST-K on 26-27th of Oct.2007. The knowledge sharing and use for making agricultural graduate and scientists was emphasized by our worthy Chancellor. A vision of poverty alleviation through backyard poultry intervention was the theme of the seminar. Many belts in Gurez, Tangdar, Telail and Zanskar are rearing native livestock species. Who are better suited and need improvement and identification. The cooking methods will need more expansion and scientific intervention for export. More emphasis has to be made on:

	Safe feed and food.

	Organic fodder and food.

Operational excellence and modern mechanization to improve quality of indigenous enterprises.

Local family management to farm business management and seller-buyer medol adoption.

8.	High Value Agri-business

Rapid growth rate in high value commodities in Indian agriculture promises 40% total output. The sectors assuming importance for export earnings are Fruits, milk vegetable and poultry. Thus Agriclinic training centres should focus on these commodity oriented training. The sector may need more than 1 lac young entrepreneurs to achieve national goals and not the more 14000 applicants.

What is needed:

	Openness and transparency.

	Simple banking.

	Credit facility.

	Mission and Training.

I started my first business silk tie retailing using a ready made website template and shopping cart. This was because I did not want to spend a lot of money having a site built and did not know anything about web retailing so wouldn’t be able to specify what I needed anyway. It seems to me that this was a good decision. It meant that I could concentrate my work on getting the product, merchandising, sales text and internet marketing right and not worry too much about the other stuff. As I have progressed I have wanted to change some things in the site design but it has been fairly easy and cheap to do so and I have changed only the things that really needed to change. I got my website from www.DPBUk.co.uk who have been good but there are many other companies out there selling ready made retailing websites.

The first step in getting the business up and running was to add my sales text. I decided to aim initially at the UK market only as that is the one I know and is less competitive than the us. My sales text for the front page aims to do a few things; show that I am UK based, show that people can trust and rely on the site (site looks professional, address is prominent, email and phone numbers are listed, money back guarantee and testimonials from customers) and encourage people to browse the ties knowing that prices are reasonable and shipping is free.

Next priority was to make finding the right tie easier. I did this by creating all sorts of categories; by colour, by style etc. Then was the grinding effort as going into every tie in the catalogue and adding it to various categories. This effort was well worth while however, if people can’t quickly find what they are looking for then they will go elsewhere. It is so easy on the internet to pop into the next shop that you must make it very easy for people. Not only did I categorise every tie in to multiple categories, but I also tagged each tie with a basic description so that the Search box on my site would pull up relevant searches. Finally I selected what I thought were the nicest ties for the featured products on the front.

Final priority was pricing. I wanted the pricing to be competitive and to be easily changed, so that I could experiment and find the best pricing. I also wanted to make it clear to people that prices were much lower for the quality than you would get on the high street. I therefore decided to put high-street retail pricing in and then use a Sale to reduce the price to a competitive internet level. This has worked fairly well, although I think I under-priced initially. Now I am slowly increasing prices and it does not seem to be hurting sales. In pricing I wanted to have progressive quantity discounts to encourage people to buy more silk ties, however the cart system couldn’t handle it. In the website administration it did have bands for price by quantity which I filled in for every product, only to find that it only worked if you bought multiples of the same silk tie. I haven’t yet found a way of doing what I want with the cart, but am glad that I left the volume discounts bulk buying of the same tie in. I get lots of orders for multiples of the same tie from clubs, companies and weddings and having the discounts has definately paid off.

Have a look at the site at www.tiespecialist.com to see the design in action. After a week or so have work every evening and weekend the site was looking good enough to go. I placed a few trial orders for silk ties to make sure everything worked. It didn’t. Test, test and test again until it works great. Finally the moment of truth, I was ready to go live and start getting customers.

Google AdWords has been the biggest expense in getting the business going. To have a successfull internet business you have to get people to come to your site. When you start a high-street shop you have passers by to sell to but when you start a new website you have no passers by. Google does not rank new websites highly so no one will find you by accident. The only way to get visitors quickly is to advertise. I figured that offline advertising wouldn’t be very good, much better to sell to people when they are at their computers already. I also figured that banner ads and listing sites are poor value for money. I therefore focused all my advertising on AdWords first and then Overture.

AdWords is a very clever system. Completely automated, it allows you to advertise to people whoare searching for particular keywords in particular countries. For example for www.tiespecialist.com I want people in the UK who are searching for tie, ties, silk ties, woven silk ties, wedding ties, bow ties, polyester ties etc. The adverts appear on the right hand side of Google and you only pay when someone clicks through. In this way it is better than traditional advertising in that you know you get visitors to your site for your adspend.

How far your ad is from the top depends on how much you are willing to pay and your click through rate (CTR). In essence Google maximises the money making potential of each search by showing the ads people are most likely to click on and that pay the most. When I started my website I put in lots of keywords, wrote an ad and aimed it at the UK. I quickly found that I needed to pay 20p to 35p per click to be in the top 3 for the ads. In the first week of advertising I generated 150 clicks or so per day at 25p each on average and got no sales. After the 1st week sales started to come in at the rate of 1 or 2 per day. When I worked out the cost per conversion I was paying 40 per day for 1 to 2 sales, giving a cost per order of 20 to 40 pounds. The gross margin on an average order is only 10 so I am losing money with every order. This is to be expected at first and I was quite prepared to invest in marketing to get potential customers so that I could improve my website and then build a customer base which would give me long term profitability. However to make pay per click advertising work I needed to do a whole bunch of things:

Cut my cost per click dramatically Improve my conversion rate once people clicked through to my site Increase the average order size I have managed to get the cost per click down to less than 15p per click average by doing a number of things.

First of all I tested lots of keywords to find ones for which there was little competition. For example “how to tie a tie” has no one else advertising on it so I can get traffic for the minimum of 2 pence per click. However the keywords have to be relevant to your product and ultimately convert to sales. I have still found that the vast majority of searches are on the simple keywords; tie, ties so I have to find a way of getting in to that space if I want to get decent numbers of visitors.

Secondly, improve the ads. A great feature of AdWords is that you can run multiple ads simultaneously and track the click through rates of each. Then you get rid of the worst performing ads. The key here is to change one part of your ad at a time (so that you know which change causes the effect) and to wait until you have had least 50 clicks on an ad before making a judgement on it (at low numbers of clicks the performance can fluctuate dramatically with chance). As your ad gets better CTR you get more visitors and a higher ranking so you can reduce the amount per click and still get the same performance. I have improved my average click through from 0.75% when I started to 2.6% by running better ads.

Thirdly, remove poor performing words. You will find that there are some words which are not particularly relevant or have lots of competition, where your clickthrough is low and cost high. I have found it is best to delete them. I have also used negative keywords which allow you to exclude certain words. For example with “tie” I found that some people were searching for “tie fighter” so had “-fighter” in AdWords to exclude these searches. This improves CTR and position.

Fourthly, check out the competition and decide where you need to be in the ranking. For my art website www.artspecialist.co.uk selling oil painting reproductions of masterpieces, I have found that for many words the competition are selling painting courses or prints. Why pay high CTR’s to rank above these companies when potential customers will be scanning past them anyway. I have found it really pays to type each keyword into Google and decide where you need to be to match your competitors. On some words I can be bottom and still be the first company selling oil painting reproductions .

I hope you have found this useful. Read more on my blog at http://specialist-paintings-ties.blogspot.com/. In the next article I will take about conversion rates
