There is no such thing as a great franchise opportunity. Franchise businesses have lower survival rates than independent businesses. The only exception are multi-unit franchisees that can afford to bet on many stores knowing full well that some of them are not going toi make it.

If there would be a low cost high ROI franchise everybody would do it. But depends, if you find a good spot you can have a good ROI with a Subway, or other fast food. Ice cream franchise would be good during summer, if you have no competition in the area.

I would guess, about 3,000. Franchising has experienced an expansion in 1970s and early 1980s, but then the growth began to slow down. In 1972, there were 909 franchisors in the U.S.; in 1986, 2,177; by 1995, the number increased to 2,618.

There is a book called The Franchise Annual, which is published annually and contains data and profiles of all franchises operating in the U.S., Canada, and internationally. Ask your local public library if they have a copy (they most likely do).

My suggestion is to visit local stores and ask questions.
Do they like the business? Without asking what they make a year, ask them if it can be profitable. Ask, ask, ask. Offer someone a free lunch if they answer your questions. Gives them a little incentive to be more forthcoming. Oscar.

PS Baby white or what ever her name is, is wrong about pricing at the stores vs. the hubs. Insurance being the only casualty their. The stores charge more for insurance. Also, mbe4120 seems a little bitter. Must not be doing as well as some of the other stores. I know someone who is running one. He is making more than he ever has. Don't listen to us, go to the stores.
Buy in is between 150.000 and 260.000. They want you to have 40.000 cash on hand. Good luck.

There are actually a lot of industries that give you an incredible opportunity that do not require high wealth to start. Rather it would be successful to you or not is all on you and how you build your own business. Every person is different, every business operation in business is different. I've even see a McDonald's shut down in an area because the business was improperly managed and not bringing enough income to keep it going. Every business has an opportunity to make a sufficient income for the owner. The success depends on the owner and what they do. If your unfamiliar with how to build a business, then I suggest you get involved in an industry that has training programs and earn as you learn that industry and build your own business. Sure you can take business classes before starting if you'd like. But you can also take on the programs that different industries offer for building a business in that industry, and make the money while at it verses taking a general business class that doesn't focus on a particular industry. Each industry is different on how they're ran, what you do, and what not to do.
There are thousands of industries that have these types of opportunities. Just take a look around.
As far as 10 thousand, you don't need that much at all to start a home based business in an industry and run it out of your home. In fact, most home based business cost under $500 to start. You have the same income opportunity as any traditional business around, but without all the over head expenses and the same tax benefits as well.

I am 95% sure the answer is A & W Restaurants but cannot cite a source. I believe they first began franchising in the early 1920's.
